A Nicer Inbox

Not wanting to jinx things, I won't name publications or stories in this post.

I received notification that one story has been long listed, and another has been accepted, but I also have an issue.

With the story that's been accepted, it has over a year before it can be published due to a backlog. Do I accept the wait and be happy it's found a home or withdraw it from consideration and see if I can find it a home elsewhere?

I've never been faced with a decision like this before.

Suggestions?

  1. I'd be happy it's found a home, that is unless you're absolutely sure it'll find a home somewhere else.

  2. I always take the acceptance, if I'm happy with the market. I've had quite a few print markets with over a year's worth of backlog. It seems to be the standard.

    (congrats, by the way)

  3. I take the acceptance too, no matter how long the wait. Unless you think you can do better with the story at another market, of course, I'd say go with it. That way you don't have to fuss with that story again for a long time. :)

Congrats on the acceptance either way!

  4. Take the acceptance. Sometimes things happen and it could be moved up in line. :)

    Congrats!

  5. Take the acceptance! If you've sold a piece it doesn't matter when it'll be published. I've got a piece that won't be coming out till October, but I'm very pleased it's been accepted. Submit other work to other places and bank this one.

  6. Definitely take the acceptance...a year's lag time is quite normal for a print market. Well done!

  7. I'd probably take the acceptance. I waited seven months for the latest one that has come out, and I'd probably have waited longer.

  9. Thanks everyone for the input. I've never been told to wait this long before with this genre so I wasn't sure. I've waited 18 months for a couple of erotica pieces from acceptance to publication but that was okay because I wasn't writing erotica anymore.

I've submitted my happiness and total joy about being accepted. Now I hope they still want it...

  10. What's the publication in question?

  11. Depends on the story/publications. I have a story due out in 2010, but its a had-to-place story in a respected online magazine so I'm happy to wait. Besides, once it's 2010 I'll be happy to have that extra story coming out : )
